<h4 style="text-align: center;">
We have some big news to share with you... you heard it here first!</h4>
We will be opening the Little Blue House (LBH) to guests starting in June. Our tiny Gold Rush home will be available to rent through Airbnb from June until September. We were hesitant to do this at first, but it is too lovely not to share.<br />
<br />
Plus, we think that the revenue we generate through some seasonal rentals will help us to finish the restoration of the LBH. So, that is a good thing.<br />
<br />
And, we are quite sure that guests will take care of our 122-year old cottage, and that they will love it as much as we do.<br />
<br />
Please share this news far and wide, and we would appreciate it if you share a link to our listing on Airbnb with any of your friends and family who may be planning a getaway to beautiful Atlin, BC!<br />
<br />

Looks like it's been a while since I have written anything at all. Launching a few businesses and raising children probably has something to do with that, but then it sounds like I am making excuses!<br />
<br />
The Little Blue House (or LBH if you've read my old posts) is doing just fine. We have had our renovations largely on-hold for the past 2 years, due to costs. That is how it goes with an old house, right? We threw a lot of money and time at our LBH, and we prevented the house from falling down. She was on a downward trajectory, for sure, listing to starboard, sinking, and home to many types of rodents.<br />
<br />
We did recently complete a small improvement, however! We purchased some used walnut flooring from a local builder. A client of his had pulled it up, after he became bored with it... Lucky us! We waited for a couple of years to install the flooring in the master bedroom. In the intervening time, some type of large rodent took up residence in the pallet where the walnut flooring was stored. This may have occurred when the pallet of flooring was outdoors at the home of its previous owner.<br />
<br />
In any case, when our trusty carpenter Rick opened up the pallet, the stench was quite unbearable. Much of the flooring was destroyed by the urine and feces of this animal (martin, mink, weasel, ermine??). Yuck.<br />
<br />
He cleaned the flooring (narrow, tongue-and-groove type) and installed it over the sub-floor of the master bedroom. He put the sub-floor in after a total <a href="http://littlebluehouse1898.blogspot.com/2013/08/great-excavations.html" target="_blank">excavation</a> of that room several years ago. We'd simply painted the sub-floor so we could use it while we waited and saved our pennies!<br />
<br />
Here's a series of shots that show the original master bedroom, in what was once a 2-room cabin hauled from the gold-mining ghost town of Discovery, about 7 km away...<br />

My next post will have the recent photos of the master bedroom, so you can see the improvement. Baby steps... We still haven't finished the ceiling, walls, or trim in that room... Not to mention finishing the parlour or even starting on the kitchen!<br />
<br />
Thank you for tuning back in to my neglected blog!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7851768512006419909.post-27693293533974667332017-08-31T11:23:00.002-07:002017-08-31T11:23:53.473-07:00The PorchThe LBH had a tiny front porch at one time, which must have been added when the buildings were dragged 7 km from the then-ghost town of Discovery. The house was made up of 2 of those Gold Rush era cabins, which were joined together in the middle. We think that this was done in 1917, as the linoleum floor has an underlay of Vancouver Daily Sun newspapers dated 1917 - full coverage of WWI... Interesting stuff!<br />
<br />
We have one old photo of the LBH, from the <a href="http://littlebluehouse1898.blogspot.ca/2013/02/from-archives.html" target="_blank">BC Archives</a>. In the picture, a man, woman and baby are sitting on the front steps - of the porch - in black and white, with quite a tree-less landscape in the background. (Atlin had recently burned down, the last of 3 major fires that devastated the town in the early 1900s. Discovery, abandoned, provided many buildings for Atlin - the ultimate feat of recycling.)<br />
<br />
When we bought the house 5 years ago, there was an even smaller porch than the one pictured in the old photo, and it was leaning in towards the house, rotting. It wasn't difficult to pull it off. During our renovations, we've schemed and wondered about what we should do about a porch. We wanted to honour the history of the house, but we also did not want front stairs that end up directly in the street.<br />
<br />
Here are some photos to show what has been going on. The porch is nearly complete! Our trusty carpenter just has to install the stairs and the access door to the crawl space, along with the remaining skirting on the exterior foundation. It's coming along nicely. Because much of the lumber is pressure-treated, we must wait at least a year before painting the porch. Luckily, our recycled cedar spindles were previously painted red, which is handy because it makes the porch look great in the meantime.<br />

First, please accept my apologies for not blogging... We've been just enjoying our Little Blue House, in all of its unfinished glory. Since last summer, when we <a href="http://littlebluehouse1898.blogspot.ca/2016/07/painting-pics.html" target="_blank">painted</a> the exterior, we really haven't done too much with the wee Gold Rush house.<br />
<br />
Well, except kill about 4 mice (that we know of)... We were rodent-free for 2 years or so, and somehow, the pesky little vermin have been sneaking into the house, probably through the addition, which is about 25 years old. When we <a href="http://littlebluehouse1898.blogspot.ca/2013/07/cribbing-crib.html" target="_blank">picked up</a> the front (old) part of the house up and then placed it on a new foundation, the seam where it joined the addition was most definitely subject to some wrenching. Someone told me once that a mouse only needs a space the size of a nickel to squeeze into an area.<br />
<br />
Now we have several mouse traps, and my husband spray-foamed the hell out of a few cracks in our floor (that accessed the crawl space). He also crawled around in the dark and spidery crawl space, on all fours, to inspect everything down there... He emerged with a case of the heebie-jeebies. Then it was beer o'clock for sure.<br />
<br />
In other news, I recently finished the last bit o' painting - the bay window, which is undoubtedly our favourite feature of the house. I will attempt now to include a photo (and I sound like I'm making excuses when I say that is one of the reasons I haven't blogged in recent months... my Blogger app stopped working on my iPhone, and that is how I have been speaking to you for a long time now)! So I am actually logged into a big computer - an actual computer! - and I am writing.<br />
<br />
Thanks, Tom, for gently nudging me back to writing here... Don't forget about me! This story isn't over yet, people!<br />

Happy Halloween from the Little Blue House! I have been rather quiet lately... The house is doing great, with work more or less paused until the Spring Thaw! We have found it to be rather an expensive enterprise, restoring a Gold Rush era former brothel. Surprising! Hehe.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
That said, I am looking to earn some more money to help pay for it, so it doesn't all fall on my husband's shoulders. More on that in a later post.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For now, we would like to wish our readers a Happy Halloween!</div>

This really doesn't have anything to do with the LBH, at least not directly. I am tired, however, from all of these renovations.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
If I had been building the house in the late 1800s, perhaps a well-intentioned advert such as this one may have caught my eye?</div>

If you've ever painted a house, you will understand that the work is all in the preparation. It's especially so when you have 118 years of lead paint removal to deal with!<div><br></div><div>We have completed the north wall, minus a few pieces of new siding that will be installed (removed due to rot when the foundation was redone). Perhaps you saw my last post with the photo... Well, painting is underway at the LBH! I spent 3 straight days painting last week, in between rain showers. I really had just one delay, and the weather was fine for painting.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's the fresh first coat on the north wall of the addition! The only annoyance during this time was the mosquitos trying to attack me, of course because I was a sitting duck.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSCqXtCMznYc1_YrwTfo2N1afMT4Y8LVE9bDWR27dPlemetSwfmeYvGTcQrpH-poFBhgbHxQ2x8jt8f040rGGJZft1KHakm0LywEaB_zwC3lfD8lY6d5QpZJ398rMpJXI93_nFHOBXANHc/s640/blogger-image--1098342315.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSCqXtCMznYc1_YrwTfo2N1afMT4Y8LVE9bDWR27dPlemetSwfmeYvGTcQrpH-poFBhgbHxQ2x8jt8f040rGGJZft1KHakm0LywEaB_zwC3lfD8lY6d5QpZJ398rMpJXI93_nFHOBXANHc/s640/blogger-image--1098342315.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I call this section the Two Hour Wall. It's nearly 27 feet long, with a couple of windows and a big water tank in the way. (I guess I'll have to wait until we drain the water in the fall to get to that pesky bit.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEpqoX7iSEYHhVd56HI6DDo5WaqVS7J5kO9VkjyiJZQM6Cich87JzC-x7OuEnnCC0_zgGcWldXTLigVXMfiXOzxO_WOh9vpFd1FZX8OYy-QRVM0ErcKvZ7LgIXVTT4Ht4Qto-01mwGxlBa/s640/blogger-image--1247317376.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEpqoX7iSEYHhVd56HI6DDo5WaqVS7J5kO9VkjyiJZQM6Cich87JzC-x7OuEnnCC0_zgGcWldXTLigVXMfiXOzxO_WOh9vpFd1FZX8OYy-QRVM0ErcKvZ7LgIXVTT4Ht4Qto-01mwGxlBa/s640/blogger-image--1247317376.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is the side entrance, on the weathered south side of the LBH. It's the door that we use all of the time. It was tricky simply because of the door, awning and window. At this point I was feeling very pleased with myself, and the colour was drying into a gorgeous blue (thank you, Benjamin Moore)! Then it occurred to me that this was only the first coat. A great first day, however!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
On the second day, I completed the north wall...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtMOPZd0mtw2MyzZVTbgDqdaGvLoWwZvU5pm1Ck547cT5oz_gFYQJym02U_DAyT_FOBW1MW-5r-AAAy3ozcYDjh2rK3mHh13LmcBf2AcgN1sznVuU1HnG6Zwlk8IqXjCqk3nob_xVbcp_Y/s640/blogger-image--1420378130.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtMOPZd0mtw2MyzZVTbgDqdaGvLoWwZvU5pm1Ck547cT5oz_gFYQJym02U_DAyT_FOBW1MW-5r-AAAy3ozcYDjh2rK3mHh13LmcBf2AcgN1sznVuU1HnG6Zwlk8IqXjCqk3nob_xVbcp_Y/s640/blogger-image--1420378130.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And I completed the Two Hour Wall...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVuyGZ7gJVdSrLOqy01ZYyb09bn_tnHv0tk-f9B1XFsm4GY_rYXy2xOoXvl9-wy0_fv1e-qOLmAb7lvBsUDBop8XYRsGiVXqwrFMkvSyBYHR_lWuZcaFcTZo9AKmqODzFesus5HlLeKpzG/s640/blogger-image--403575639.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVuyGZ7gJVdSrLOqy01ZYyb09bn_tnHv0tk-f9B1XFsm4GY_rYXy2xOoXvl9-wy0_fv1e-qOLmAb7lvBsUDBop8XYRsGiVXqwrFMkvSyBYHR_lWuZcaFcTZo9AKmqODzFesus5HlLeKpzG/s640/blogger-image--403575639.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And then I finished the second coat on this part of the south side...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFeb_F2MmXhAi6Ybu5pBe8qz1CdaYwVrin4EiME3pW49zKiNdrYF8fFqqG0IzDmKXP4Zl2Qa78eiukcp-mBWUv2X1t7udC23dPwnSx6XHDAIfM51c2RSscer0szZprYLdU9g6aTzH23YMY/s640/blogger-image-938755103.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFeb_F2MmXhAi6Ybu5pBe8qz1CdaYwVrin4EiME3pW49zKiNdrYF8fFqqG0IzDmKXP4Zl2Qa78eiukcp-mBWUv2X1t7udC23dPwnSx6XHDAIfM51c2RSscer0szZprYLdU9g6aTzH23YMY/s640/blogger-image-938755103.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It does look kind of weird, with both the old and new, and not to mention the awkward upper bit of the addition that I left unpainted! My husband and I agreed that we'd tackle that part together when we paint the original LBH in July. Since I was working alone, it might have been a little sketchy on the big ladder way up there. We are going to borrow some scaffolding for the next part of the job. You can really see how weathered this side of the house is. I have my flakes of old paint in a sandwich bag, and the lead testing kit I ordered finally came in, so I am going to get it tomorrow. I am pretty sure that old paint will have some nasty lead in it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu9cAvku2KvQ-_XfLmSLuhT3en7qBceLtxF2FxlZ7aCEgaZykX4iGuzvpIPUGit1ZV2ZC7OsyxRQh8THxWgU9u7l45fH2uc2Sci2bpbL_pxNzYc7XLLgcB2vrRV_4lo5mggw0vy90FjtXr/s640/blogger-image--875761436.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu9cAvku2KvQ-_XfLmSLuhT3en7qBceLtxF2FxlZ7aCEgaZykX4iGuzvpIPUGit1ZV2ZC7OsyxRQh8THxWgU9u7l45fH2uc2Sci2bpbL_pxNzYc7XLLgcB2vrRV_4lo5mggw0vy90FjtXr/s640/blogger-image--875761436.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I was able to paint most of the trim on the addition, too, with the notable exception of the awning. We are considering a tricolour scheme there, to mirror the panels under the <a href="http://littlebluehouse1898.blogspot.ca/2016/01/bay-window-panels-are-done.html">bay window</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Unfortunately, our contractor is ill, so we are anticipating a delay in the installation of the lower pieces of coved siding and new corner/trim boards around the front (old) part of the house. Until they're installed, I don't know if we should go ahead and paint! We will think on it some more, but you know how it is when you've already arranged for time off in your schedule to complete a task... I'll bet we end up just going ahead with it! We can add a few more pieces of siding afterwards, right?</div>

We are starting with the addition at the rear of the LBH. We sanded, cleaned and primed the exterior. The addition is about 20-25 years old. The exterior paint isn't in bad shape. But we're changing the colours slightly. Don't worry, it'll still be the Little <i>BLUE </i>House! The north side is in the best condition, as the weather here comes predominantly from the south.<br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZhFtmLuGN5ML5A3Ol_sFebCH70A33ZlVAu74AFXJpRcyLw6kKlfkkhJ-XMZvHOP7KhJ_DEf2be8b5GMEWk872zml79srJALU-kIFHxaErbXSqnpazDJAvjew4pZZgEC7dVuL42fxNnZtO/s640/blogger-image-1504914956.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZhFtmLuGN5ML5A3Ol_sFebCH70A33ZlVAu74AFXJpRcyLw6kKlfkkhJ-XMZvHOP7KhJ_DEf2be8b5GMEWk872zml79srJALU-kIFHxaErbXSqnpazDJAvjew4pZZgEC7dVuL42fxNnZtO/s640/blogger-image-1504914956.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">North Side, Addition</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The east side wasn't too bad either. This is going to be the toughest side once we get to the original part (age: 118 years) of the house. We plan to tackle that part in early July when the kids are with their grandparents! I've ordered a lead-testing kit from the hardware store, although we're quite sure that amongst the 4-5 layers of paint, lead will be present.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">At least the addition seems fairly straightforward to paint. Hi there! I think it's been a good long while since I've posted some Before & After photos. It's an exercise that I find helpful for my state of mind (to help with the, Oh No! Why Are We Spending So Much Time and Money On This Little Falling Down House?)...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I sincerely hope that it will be interesting for you, too. Especially if you are just stumbling upon my blog for the first time. We've been at this for years now, and it's a long process. Restoring a Gold Rush house is a dream come true, and it's something that I love to obsess about. :) If you have the time and inclination (and perhaps a cup of coffee or a cocktail) you may wish to explore my older posts to see what this place is all about.</div>

We were going to paint last summer & then we kinda got lazy. So we didn't paint the house. We actually sat around and drank beer. <div><br></div><div>However, we designed decorative panels to go under each leaded glass window in our "bay window room," facing First Street in Atlin. Then our trusty carpenter built them for us! He installed them last week, and they look amazing!</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid7NxTiMhcIi4xq5NYfzdkQ8UHxa9sxlhDoto9FSzWWLvDJ6-DiTQxtkiQeLa5ye7lCvMxPS43qqS3hDH85VcO0cdCr8a0v4OJny7cJmZdys4cH4ivIhs5jAUrCIFFKRf_dbUqUoD4VpWK/s640/blogger-image-1271103724.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid7NxTiMhcIi4xq5NYfzdkQ8UHxa9sxlhDoto9FSzWWLvDJ6-DiTQxtkiQeLa5ye7lCvMxPS43qqS3hDH85VcO0cdCr8a0v4OJny7cJmZdys4cH4ivIhs5jAUrCIFFKRf_dbUqUoD4VpWK/s640/blogger-image-1271103724.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">It gives you an idea of what the LBH will look like when the rest of the house is painted. It was too short a stay... We were there last in November. There really isn't much snow this year. We tromped with the kids across the nearby alkali flats and up a small ridge. There was a gorgeous view of Atlin Lake, a large blue sky, and animal prints for us to follow. <br></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifS16SRk8CIPpVsnbRuy1ehywry0nLGRX3u9APyGzsLJZNRDc-t_vDL5YAdyBrxabxUb1LIKDR9HkiPfCjf2Zm548DzAq7t5C8PyRfe1GMI3KvuDXFEnAz9l9zTvGsNp-2VrtbpB176fMj/s640/blogger-image-2081698722.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifS16SRk8CIPpVsnbRuy1ehywry0nLGRX3u9APyGzsLJZNRDc-t_vDL5YAdyBrxabxUb1LIKDR9HkiPfCjf2Zm548DzAq7t5C8PyRfe1GMI3KvuDXFEnAz9l9zTvGsNp-2VrtbpB176fMj/s640/blogger-image-2081698722.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The lake is still open - it should normally freeze up in January - as it's been a relatively mild winter so far. We heard that there are many animals in and around town: lynx, wolf, deer... They're apparently waiting to cross the lake to forage or hunt on the other side. Various tracks were visible along this ridegline. </span></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7851768512006419909.post-13316767516900370192016-01-02T22:30:00.001-08:002016-01-02T22:30:05.572-08:00Happy New Year!<br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEji-hTQGShWrc4w88uUf7UGrXibW78IPPnWhtnAGfMVvuw1XvBJzXhVFrTFBoxZ77K7hQAy1LA7fBOgzZZqJ67opuICyx0Tyqv53GxD4PcJLnFiIlXyELaekAlwJC4fGTyEErQA60lTyZMm/s640/blogger-image-972900819.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEji-hTQGShWrc4w88uUf7UGrXibW78IPPnWhtnAGfMVvuw1XvBJzXhVFrTFBoxZ77K7hQAy1LA7fBOgzZZqJ67opuICyx0Tyqv53GxD4PcJLnFiIlXyELaekAlwJC4fGTyEErQA60lTyZMm/s640/blogger-image-972900819.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Happy New Year! I have a good feeling about this year. 2016! The past several months have brought much change, for the good... I believe I'm going to have more time to spend at our LBH this year, working on the restoration, and blogging about it. 😊</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I retired from my career as an airline pilot, which was taking over my life... Now I am enjoying more time with my family, living in the present (more than ever) and also reflecting on what will come next. Work of some kind, but I don't know yet... Certainly I will work on fixing up our tiny, former brothel - it needs more attention!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I wish you health & happiness in this new year!</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2
